Mini Twists: Pros and Cons
Hi again, weExchangers! As a follow up to Nai's last blog post, I wanted to share about my protective style of choice at that time...the mini twists. After all, today is Throwback Thursday. First off, a few things to be aware of if your hair is like mine (meaning somewhat fine and tangles on sight!):
*Be very careful when installing the mini twists because stray hairs are detrimental to this style, especially when it's time to take them down.
*Do not borrow hair from either section when twisting because this also will make the take down process frustrating.
*Make sure that the twists are intact by twisting snugly.
*I partially blow dried my hair prior to twisting to make parting and sectioning my hair easier.
Now on to the pros and cons…
-This is a very versatile style; you can do so much with mini twists in terms of styling (see pics).
-It is a protective style (requiring little manipulation) when done correctly and not left in for an excessive amount of time.
-Longevity...I was in and out of the water, washing them almost daily for a week and while I re-touched them after our trip, I was still able to keep them for about a total of four weeks.
Side note: Based on research done prior to styling, I washed my hair with a stocking cap to keep the frizz down and I believe it helped preserve the twists longer. I also followed the same steps of my regular wash routine by applying a leave-in and oil after washing and conditioning my hair.
-They take some time to install. I did them over a period of two days, I'm not sure of the exact amount of hours with the breaks and errand running I had to do, but patience is required.
-Again if your hair is like mine, it will be very prone to knots and tangles after some time, which is why I would not recommend keeping the style for more than four weeks.
-In terms of protective styling for swimming, you may not get as much wear as you would with a style requiring you to add hair such as braids or Senegalese twists.
Overall, I will definitely do this style again due to the longevity and versatility. I hope this helps if you’re looking to give mini twists a try!
